Notes from Open Meeting on 12/13/06 compiled by Cheryl H. facilitated
by Pat Galvin
* folks want to know where to get more information about “Breaking
Ranks”
* communication needs to improve between all 3 parts - parents, staff,
students
* take time, don’t move too quickly
* difference between Open/Alternative education? What is it?
* strategic plan went back to founding vision - DM “when organizations
leave the founding vision they will fail - especially if there’s not
enough buy in”
* Don S - principal ‘88-’98: Steller obviously still has soul/humanity
- evident because of all the people present and this discussion taking
place; must be developed together - students, staff, parents
* student requested to have more dialogue in this meeting - more back
and forth
* should there be subcommittees for each topic made up of students,
staff, parents?
* parent involvement - not a concern for students except that they’re
wondering “how much involvement do parents really want?”
* older students need to be active role models for the younger ones -
younger students not inspired due in part to lack of enthusiasm on
behalf of the older students
* make what happened on tonight’s charts (quantify it) and report it
out to the school community
* don’t meet during intensives or finals week
* do the exact same stickers on posters thing w/ students
* have more town meetings - instead of representative type of meetings
where ad board members “represent” their “people”
* students DO want to know want parents think
* students take responsibility for getting this info back to other
students & figure out how it will be discussed and gather consensus
in some way
